Oppo,
I just lost my cushy internship and it looks like I'll have to be scraping some money together. One thing I might look to cut costs on is my car.
I'm currently driving a 2000 V6 Mustang convertible, and while I think it's neat I'm also not tremendously happy with it because it's heavy, slow, and the gas mileage isn't great. The paint's not great from parking it at college where kids don't care and I need to replace one of the cylinders in the convertible top. I live in Florida so convertibles are awesome.
Should I sell it and buy an NA Miata, (or whatever else, but let's be real here. I'm asking Oppo.) or should I just keep it because that would be too much hassle.
I don't know. I'm thinking with emotions. I need unconcerned third parties.

Sell it and buy a V8 version.

I agree with Crocket Bernet. Miata. I'd say an older Porsche Boxster, but maintenance would kill you financially.

Miata's are soooooooo lame.

Meh, you're not going to really cut costs on a vert from a 2000 mustang to anything really unless you picked up a well sorted lebaron or something. I'd stick with it until it died or go all in and just buy a 1000 dollar beater to thrash until I could step up.

Miata is better but remember that the miata is also pretty slow and doesn't get super stellar fuel economy either.
What I think it boils down to is how much you use the back seat, you're in college do you ferry around your friends a lot? Do you want to avoid doing that in the future?

Can you live with the markedly smaller cabin/storage/everything? I have a 2003 vert GT and have owned 2 Miatas. Daily driving them, in my experience, means some sacrifices in space, visibility (being eye level with SUV wheels), etc. The tranny died on my 1999 Miata, pretty expensive fix. So while they are pretty reliable, they can still go bad.

Nope. I use the back seat never and would embrace fully the roadster lifestyle.

without know the facts, the car is worth $6-10k? How much are you hoping to buy a Miata for? The amount of money you pocket may not be worth it. Had you been doing it just because then it's different, but your outlook is a financial one.
For me to do that, in Ontario, I'd be paying 13% tax on a used car, so selling a $10,000 car and buying a $7000 Miata would only provide me with $2000 in my pocket, to me that's not really worth it. If I were in need of cash-money I'd sell the car and look for an Economy car that is newer-ish and in the $5000 range. Saves money all around, then when you snag a new job, get a car you want again.

That would cost me more in inital outlay, more in gas, no thanks. Once I have my CS degree January 2015 I'm going to buy an S2000, so now I've got to consider cost primarily, fun second.

Absolutely. My primary storage in the car is a backpack, so that wouldn't be a bother.

The car is worth about $5000. NA Miatas around here seem to go for 2-3, so I'd be pocketing about $15000, probably.
There is an element of "just because" though. I'm wondering if I can justify owning this car since I'm not tremendously stable.

Looking at one of your post in the replies, it seems like no matter what you buy now, you'll be replacing it with an S2000 in the not-to-distant future.
The Miata is a good option, but as long term reliability seems like less of a factor in your case, why not go for something a little more adventurous? I'd check out a well sorted Alfa Spider.

Sell it, steal a V8 version, use proceeds from sale to improve new Mustang.

Now we're getting somewhere.

If you can pocket FIFTEEN THOUSAND DOLLARS by selling your '00 Mustang for Miata. That's a good deal!

Don't ever make big purchases when financial future is unknown. I remember this one time when a bunch of people bought houses they couldn't afford...

I'd be crazy not to.

Look at e30s. Everything you love about the Miata, but with some usable space.

Sell it and buy a C4 Corvette. They're affordable, fast, good on gas (26-30 highway), parts for pre-90 ones are inexpensive, and there's a huge community to support you if you need help just like with Mustangs. :)
